The Display

The Display and the finish is similar to its predecessors. BUT the display of the S9 and the S9 Plus are touted as the best displays in the market. These models boast a 15% brighter screen and with the 1.2mm of the bezels slimmed down, the infinity display makes the content look richer and better. The Camera

Samsung understand that the main selling point for a phone apart from texting and social media is the camera. People buy smartphones for taking great selfies and videos.

That’s what Apple has been betting their smartphone business on.

With these two new phones, Samsung isn’t behind.

The camera comes with two aperture settings. One for low-light and the other for daylight. In low-light, the camera lets in more light, up to 28% more to get a better quality shot.

You can actually see the aperture movement with your naked eyed. This feature is a first of its kind in the history of smartphones.

Now, only this feature makes the Samsung a serious contender, in terms of the camera quality.

Another feature Samsung is promoting is the super slow motion capture at 960 frames per second.

The Dual pixels of the cameras are also ‘Super Speed’ that has dedicated processing power that improves the image quality.

Another cool feature is ‘Motion-Detection’, where the phone detects motion and automatically starts recording.

The Processor

The Snapdragon 845 processor that the Samsung S9 and S9 plus work with are 25% faster in the year 2017 than the previous year. It’s also expected to reduce the load on the battery life which makes the battery last longer.

Not all regions get the Snapdragon 845. Countries in Europe and Singapore are expected to get the Exynos 9810 processor. According to various tests, it’s not expected to impact the performance of the phone.

Colour

The S9 and the S9 plus get a touch of color. The colors they will be released in are Coral Blue and Lilac purple apart from the default Midnight Black and Titanium Gray.

The Fingerprint Reader

Samsung’s Fingerprint Reader which was in the Samsung S8 model was an utter failure. Samsung made a design faux-pas by placing it next to the camera and users found it annoying to use it to open their phones.

In these new models, they’ve fixed this. It’s located right below the camera, in the center.

Speakers

Samsung have ‘listened’ to their users and retained the 3.5MM jack. The speakers are dual stereo that is tuned by Harman. Based on some data, it’s also 40% louder than the speaker on Samsung S8.

Using Augmented Reality – Samsung S9 way

Making Emojis

When the iPhone X launched, they came up with Emojis that users could create with their own faces. Samsung didn’t want to lag behind and they created their own.

So how it works is, you take a selfie on your phone without smiling and with this 18 images are created that you can use as a GIF while messaging.

You can also change your avatar by changing the emojis hairstyle and clothing. You also have the option to add glasses.

Live Translation

Now, this is a cool feature I’m personally stoked about.

So Bixby, which is the digital assistant created by Samsung has a feature called Live Translate. With this, you can use the S9 and S9 Plus’ powerful camera to translate a message in a language you don’t know to English.

All you need to do is, point your camera at the text and select it and Bixby does the rest. Although it does take time, this is a peek into the future of real-time translation.

Face Recognition

Samsung uses two technologies to unlock the phone screen with the users face. One is the Intelligent Scan and the other is the Iris Scan. Depending on the light, either of them are used or in some cases both are used to unlock the phone.

Dex

The Dex station which is an extra $100, lets you use your Samsung phone with a Desktop. Simple.

Prices

In Singapore, the S9 is expected to be between $950 and $1050 and the S9 Plus is expected to be priced between $1100 and $1225.

Summary

The Samsung S9 and S9 Plus Singapore are solid phones giving intense competition to the latest iPhone’s. If you are a photography aficionado, this is the phone for you. If you enjoy a good gaming experience on your phone, then this is the phone for you.
