Founded in 1995 by Duan Yongping, BBK Electronics has become a giant in the smartphone space. It owns brands like Vivo, Oppo and One Plus. Vivo founded in 2009 is headquartered in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. It’s CEO is Shen Wei, who also founded the company. Vivo started small by entering the Thailand market in 2009, but has already established its presence in over 100 countries.

Although Vivo have been around for 9 years, they have gained prominence only in the past two to three years. In 2012, they launched the X1. The X1 was the first smartphone to use a hi-fi chip. In 2013, they released the Xplay3s which was the world’s first 2k resolution screen. The company rely heavily on their R&D to come up with innovations for their smartphones. So much so that they hired over 1,600 R&D specialists.

Vivo targeted the asian market and captured a sizeable chunk in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and more. They’ve grown to such an extent that Vivo has a global smartphone market share of 2.79%.

Vivo has been a solid marketing powerhouse. They’ve tied up with entertainment and sporting properties all over the world. In India, they became the title sponsors of the India Premier League, which is the most famous cricket league in the world. They became the official sponsors for the 2018 and 2022 football world cup.

They also tied up with the National Basketball Association(NBA) in China. They also got into deals with Marvel where the Vivo phone was the official phone in the Iron Man and Captain America movies.

Their latest flagship is the Vivo V9 which is been touted as the budgeted iPhone killer because of it’s similar looks and also inexpensive pricing. Vivo, in the near future will become a smartphone power house because of their R&D capabilities and their smart marketing efforts.
