Huawei P40 / P40 Pro Design and Display

First of all the P40 and P40 Pro’ are super good looking phones. They have a punch-hole camera set-up with an infinity display. The backs of the phone has a pristine glass display and it has a rectangular block set-up that has the cameras.

These phones are beautiful and they come in a range of colours – Silver Frost, Brush Gold, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White and Black.

The P40 Pro has a higher percentage of the screen to body ratio than the P40. The P40 Pro has a screen to body ratio of 91.6% and the P40 has a screen to body ratio of 86.3%.

That 5% does make a difference when you compare the phones.

The P40 has a 6.1-inch display with an OLED screen and the P40 Pro has a 6.58-inch OLED display. As screens go, they might seem the same, but the P40 Pro is equipped with HDR10, a refresh rate of 90Hz and DCI-P3.

This is one of the better display’s out there in the market. Under the  display is the fingerprint scanner.

Huawei P40 / P40 ProOS,  EMUI and Chipset

Huawei has gone with the latest Android 10.0 with the EMUI 10.1 layer on top. Although it runs on the latest Android, because of the Google Ban, services like the play store will not be available.
From the perspective of Google’s apps, there is a concern. But Huawei has its very own Huawei App Gallery which has a few apps and not all, which is a big detriment.

The EMUI also has a voice assistant called Celia which is voice activated. It’s pretty simple to use and very much needed as people are talking to their devices more and more with Google Home and Alexa being ubiquitous.

The Huawei P40 phones also have something awesome under the hood and that’s the chipset.

It has a Hisilicon Kirin 990 5G with a Mali G76 MP16.

Both the phones have the same GPU and chipset because it’s more than sufficient. This is a powerful chipset and it makes the P40 and P40 Pro blazingly quick.

It is one of the fastest phones out there in the market.

Huawei P40 / P40 ProInternal Storage and RAM

There are obviously multiple options that you can choose from. The P40 comes with a 6GB RAM or a 8GB RAM and 128GB, 256GB of storage. It doesn’t have a 512GB option which is a little lacking.

The P40 Pro on the other hand comes with only 8GB RAM and has 128GB, 256GB and 512GB as storage options.

Huawei P40 / P40 Pro Cameras

Make no mistake. The P40 and P40 Pros are camera smartphones. Huawei is like, you can take away our Google, but you can’t take away our cameras.

The P40 and P40 Pro are enabled with a Leica optics camera, that is right up there, if not better than the best cameras that a smartphone has.

You can literally pay a premium price for the P40 and P40 Pro for only it’s camera capabilities.

If you are a blogger or Youtuber, who uses a lot of their cameras, then this is a super worthy device.

Let’s see what’s under the hood.

The P40 has a 50MP wide angle lens with a 8MP telephoto lens and a 16MP ultra wide lens. It has a 3X optical zoom(30x digital zoom), which is pretty great.

The P40 Pro on the other hand has a 50MP wide angle lens and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with a 5X optical zoom(50x digital zoom). It also has a 40MP ultra wide lens.

The P40 Pro has a Time of Flight sensor that is used to create the 3D depth bokeh effects when taking portrait images.

One of the biggest sensors used in a camera is the RYYB sensor which let’s in more light to take the most breathtaking pictures.

Huawei is introducing the XD Fusion engine which is basically Huawei’s AI capabilities on a smartphone. Huawei did have AI in their past cameras, but this is the next level.

The AI can smartly remove and person photobombing your picture or can reduce your reflection when you are shooting objects through a glass.

The video shooting capabilities of the P40 and P40 Pro can be compared to a DSLR because of the aspect ratio.

The impact of this camera cannot be understated and these phones are an investment for people who will definitely use the phone camera.

Battery

The P40 has a 3800 mAh battery and the P40 Pro has a 4200 mAh battery. These are pretty good batteries that are backed by amazing software which ensures efficiency.

The P40 has a 22W fast charging capacity. The P40 Pro has a 40W fast charging, 22W wireless charging and 27W reverse charging, which means you can charge other devices with it.

Final Verdict

The P40 and P40 Pro’s are super powerful phones that look good, work great, have a great camera and battery life. If there’s anything lacking in the P series, it’s the Google integration. But that’s old news and Huawei is doing a lot in that department.

These flagships are equal to the iPhone and are available for a slightly lower price. Is it worth your money?

Oh yes!
